Child Protective Custody

Child protective custody is used in the context of family law when authorities believe a child’s health or welfare is in danger. A social worker or police officer can place a child into protective custody if he or she believes immediate action is needed to protect a child from abuse or neglect. Laws generally require a parent to receive written notice listing the date and time for a protective custody hearing which is typically required to be held within a short period, such as a few days, after a child has been placed into protective custody.… Read the rest

Child Custody and Support

There are two kinds of custody: legal custody and physical custody. Custody battles most often arise in a divorce or separation, requiring a court’s determination of which parent, relative or other adult should have physical and/or legal control and responsibility for a minor (child) under 18. When both parents share custody of a child after a divorce it is called joint custody. Joint custody may be either legal or physical custody. Physical custody designates where the child will actually live, whereas legal custody gives the custodial person(s) the right to make decisions for the child’s welfare.… Read the rest

Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)

Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) is a term used in child custody cases to describe one parent’s manipulation of a child to harm the other parent. It may involve rejecting (spurning), terrorizing, corrupting, denying essential stimulation, emotional responsiveness or availability, unreliable and inconsistent parenting, mental health, medical or educational neglect, degrating/devaluating the other parent, isolating, and exploiting the child. Start livin’, that’s the next thing on my list

Right at the time “I thought” my life was crumbling around me…

…a song came out by country artist Toby Keith called “My List”. Some call me a “closet country”, to this day my wife will get in my car and the radio is tuned to the local country station. Opps… I forgot to tune it back to Hip-Hop! When this song came on this line in the chorus Start livin’, that’s the next thing on my list hit a note with me. No pun intended. Here’s another line from the song:

“Wouldn’t change the course of fate but cuttin’ the grass just had to wait
Cause I’ve got more important things like pushin’ my kid on the backyard swing”

So, I grabbed my Palm Pilot, (latest technology at the time), and wrote down Start livin’, that’s the next thing on my list.Read the rest

The “Bus” Stops Here

bus-stopAfter my divorce, my ex-wife rented an apartment in our children’s current school district. I unfortunately had to rent an apartment outside the school district for monetary reasons; child support and alimony. Sound familiar? So, I drove them to-and-from their elementary school daily. A few years later I remarried and we looked for a house that would be in the school district. This way I would no longer have to drive them and they could now be bused to-and-from school.

We found a beautiful house with a yard for the kids to play in, that we are still in today, while my ex has uprooted the kids 4 times.… Read the rest

The Meanest Father in the World

It was Father’s Day morning and my wife and two children, 8 and 10, made me a delicious breakfast in bed. I was awoken with eggs, bacon, pancakes, and orange juice on my tray table. Coffee was served in a mug with the heading the “The Meanest Father in the World.”

My wife asked me to read this out loud to our two young children, the mug read:
