Right at the time “I thought” my life was crumbling around me…

…a song came out by country artist Toby Keith called “My List”. Some call me a “closet country”, to this day my wife will get in my car and the radio is tuned to the local country station. Opps… I forgot to tune it back to Hip-Hop! When this song came on this line in the chorus Start livin’, that’s the next thing on my list hit a note with me. No pun intended. Here’s another line from the song:

“Wouldn’t change the course of fate but cuttin’ the grass just had to wait
Cause I’ve got more important things like pushin’ my kid on the backyard swing”

So, I grabbed my Palm Pilot, (latest technology at the time), and wrote down Start livin’, that’s the next thing on my list. At first it was just a reminder for me but then became a list of my own. I needed to stop being dragged down by the adulterous affair and shenanigans of my soon-to-be ex-wife and focus on “me”. “Me” at that point in time was to focus on my children. So, I would write a note on my Palm Pilot to my middle son, 7 at the time, at night before I would go to bed. Then in the morning he would write me a note back. This went back-and-forth for some time and to see my son’s excitement to read what I had wrote was only overshadowed by my anticipation of the words he would write. Boys do not open up as easy as girls and this was a great way to express my feelings and have him open up with me…it was our special dad/son time.

Although technology has advanced quite a bit since my Palm Pilot, my iPhone “Notes” feature was the way me and my daughter, 8 , sent each other messages over the “Cloud” through “Notes”. Whatever the hell the “Cloud” is. A lot of “I love you’s” were exchanged among other thoughts, she loved our special communication and couldn’t wait to see my reply to what she wrote.

So, to quote the chorus from “My List”:

Like go for a walk, say a little prayer
Take a deep breath of mountain air
Put on my glove and play some catch
It’s time that I make time for that
Wade the shore and cast a line
Look up a long lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch and give my girl a kiss
Start livin’, that’s the next thing on my list
